I have a '85 with a 460. I was hoping any of you could measure the length of the spacer between the alternator and the motor, and if possible, take pictures of how your alt is mounted.
Mine just has a single bolt that goes through and into the head, and then a long skinny bracket that the alt slides for adjustment in.
Is this right? everything else seems to have bigger brackets and more mounting points... My truck came with just the bolt, I'm trying to fab a space.
This site is GREAT btw. I'm glad someone at f150online refered me here. Non of them have big enough motors to help me
I don't have acess to mine right now. I would think if you have the bolt and the bracket and your alternator you might be able to mesure how much of the bolt is taken up by the alternator and bracket. Now you can mark on the bolt the inboard edge of this setup. next screw th bolt into your block or head and mark that point. now take it out and mesure between the 2 markes and this should give you how long the spacer has to be. I would add a washer so you don't bottom out in the bolt hole. Good luck Bill

Unfortunatley I don't have the original bolt. I can't seem to find the length either, I have a couple bolts that fit of different lengths I bought, but I don't know how to line up the pulleys without the spacer...

Your original post "My truck came with just the bolt, I'm trying to fab a space"
indicated you had the origanal bolt.
I would go see if your local dealer can get you a bolt and spacer. Next would be your local junk yard.
My local dealership didn't really seem to want to help me. Plus, If I ca get a length on the space, I can then get the correct bolt at Tacoma Screw for $5.
Well you can go to the junkyard or try this. You might need a helper, take the alternator and hold it so it alines with the outher pulleys I would use a straight edge to be shure they line up then you or your helper meshure the distance to the bolt hole, then when you get a bolt read my earlier post. Bill
Unlucky for me (seriously) about two years ago they came through Woodenville and shut down *every* junkyard.
Halls Auto, and some place down the street from Pull-A-Part (which never has trucks) don't let people in...
Can anyone measure the spacer? I've already done the "try and align the pulleys and make your own" bit, thats how my truck is now, but I'm shredding the side of the belts.
I don't mean to come off as rude, I know I am the one asking for help, but all I really want is the measurment of the spacer. I'm not looking for work arounds, I just want to do this right.
I appreciate everyone who's trying to help me, but I've not had any luck so far...
Every Ford V8 has the same bolt and spacer, cars and trucks. Go to Pull-A-Part and get the bolt and a couple of spacers and the adjusting arm. Heck, send me your address and I'll mail you a bolt and spacer. Sometimes we just get all wrapped around the axle over stuff that really isn't that big of a deal. Beer helps! If you are in Tacoma go over and see Scotty at Re in"Car"nation High Performance in Tacoma, WA. 98407. He can and will help a Ford guy out!
I measured the space between the alternator and the head on the 429 on the engine stand in the garage and it is 2 3/16. If they are all the same then you should be all set with that. The 429 has a cast iron upper bracket that has the spacer mad as part of the bracket. Don't know if that makes any difference.

Any chance either of you guys could send me a pic of the bracket? I seem to be missing it. All I have is the bannana shaped adjustable bracket, and the bolt...
I'm planning a trip to pull apart again soon. I was gonna do just what you suggested, and pull a couple spacers to try. Thanks...
