Alternator spacer

Alternator spacer
My budy has a 85 f-350 with a 460. Ever since he got the truck it has been trial and error on the spacer in the alternator. I am tired of haveing to use my easy outs every 2 weeks because the top bolt snaps, which in turn is breaking all of the belts and last time he got the tanny lines in the fan blade. Yes the fan blade won. i am thinking that he has the wrong size and wrong kind of spacer on there. He is currently using a piece of pipe. How long should that spacer be and how long should the bolt be?
