I have read about spark plugs breaking off when removed due to corrosion, primarily on the 5.4. I have not seen any posts on this lately and was wondering if it is still an issue. I'm coming up on my 30K service and was thinking of having my plugs replaced by the dealer. I expect that if there is an issue and the plugs break off it will be covered under warranty. Am I wasting my time and money? How much could I expect to pay for new plugs? If I replace my plugs now will I prevent future problems? What's the risk if I wait till 100K per the service manual? Any advice would be appreciated.
I just talked to a ford service guy about 5 weeks ago. They had a truck in the shop with that problem. I have less than 1000 miles. I plan to remove mine every 15-25k miles or so just to be on the safe side.
tonyw41l, this is a real problem but how you chose to deal with it can make it a nightmare if your not careful. after reading alot on this issue and talking to the dealership and having them tell me they havent heard nothing, and 18000 miles on my truck i decided to take matters in my own hands and pulled my own sparkplugs. yes they are alittle tight but not to bad{@ 18000 miles}. i found that the shoulder where the ground shield is was starting to rust all around the sparkplug
. i put the plugs back in and took the truck to the dealer in which they changed them{warranty picked up the tab}.
this is why i say it could become a nightmare. i really dont think if you take your truck to the dealer and have them change your sparkplugs and they find bad ones they''ll tell you about it and let warranty pick up the tab. so do you pull them your self then go complain? at 30000 miles i would be scared to.
if the dealer breaks a sparkp[lug off in your head they have to fix it with charging you the extra labor. here the job cost $160 if i remember right.
i checked your bio and see you have a 05 5.4 should be a 3 valve motor , the problem is the plugs are resecessed into the head and poeple who wash thier motor don't blow the water out from around the plugs after doing so.
second would be your 5.4 is one of many motors with a new type plug that looks more like a glow plug then a spark plug that every one is used to seeing . the tapered seat is at the very bottom and the thread is untop of that seat, giving it the name thread over. plus it uses a special 9/16 plug socket that many have never seen before.
and lastly these are 100k platium plugs with a retail of apx. $9.00 each
good luck man
i used a 9/16 deepwell and it worked fine. i'm not one to rush out for the special tools. although i'm sure that the rubber inside the special tool makes it easy to work with but a magnet worked fine for me getting them out plus its almost inpossible to cross thread with a magnet.
i'm not saying that washing the motor did'nt make the problem in some of these trucks, i'm just saying that my motor has never been washed and the problem was well on it way on my sparkplugs.
