Can any diagnose this when I take off real fast the engine makes pingging noise I though it was the fuel so I start running 89 octane however its still there. The engine runs great and has lots of power, other than the take noise its OK. Should I be looking at a rebuild or another motor?
Jaye
No. Don't go look for another motor. This is just a tune problem.
Check to see if your vacuum advance is working.
When you take off (open the carb), the drop in manifold vacuum is supposed to cause the dizzy to advance. If the dizzy vacuum diaphragm has a hole in it or if you have a vacuum leak, that doesn't happen and the pinging is the result.
What year & what engine do you have?
It could be the V/A as stated by R.J., it could be your timing is to far advanced as well.
It could also mean that you just need to pump a Higher Octane of Petrol, as High Compression engines require High Test to run properly..
71 302 w/electronic ignition conversion, nothing fancy all stock I started running 89 octane still pinging. The timing is set at top dead center. The noise just started a few weeks ago.
That pinging is being caused by too much heat in your combustion chamber. The fuel is detonating too early and the pinging is the sound you hear. As mentioned earlier the timing is a likely culprit. But it could be that you are way lean on the carb. Or, it could be too hot of a spark plug, or it might be deposits in ths combustion chamber, or....... the lsit goes on. Check your timing first. If it seems ok, you might try retarding it a couple of degrees and see if the problem goes away. If that doesn't work, check the color of your plugs. White or yellow insulator means lean (hot) mixture. Good luck, Jag
