I HAVE to change my spark plugs. I've had the truck about six months it's a 93 f-150 E4OD 3.08 rear and 31's. It has been a slow dog since i got it. I know that it hasn't been beatin so i figured the auto and rearend with the 31's were slowing it down. But i pulled a plug and it was almost gone and had some light ash. gap was about .075. What plugs work? I have Autolites now.
Thanks, Jason
Any brand plug will work just fine as long as they're clean and in good shape. I've used Bosch Platinum plugs for years because they really do outlast standard plugs by a factor of 3 or 4. The electrode is shielded so it doesn't erode away over time and throw off your gap like standard plugs, which means their performance stays consistent and you very rarely have to change them. Unfortunately they don't make them for EFI 300's.
This is kinda' like saying Ford's don't run well on Shell gasoline or Chevy's don't like Exxon. I've used platinums in every vehicle that has been in my care for the past 15+ years and never had a problem in any of them... including 4 different Fords. No reason Bosch platinums or any other plug wouldn't work for any given engine. They simply work better longer.
Only issue I've ever seen with them has been damage due to installer ignorance. You can't set the gap with a regular wedge type gapping tool as the center electrode's construction is very different and can be damaged if you do. Instead you bend the ground electrode with a special tool [or needle nose pliers]. You really don't have to bother though, since if you buy the right plug for your application they're gapped right straight out of the box. Some mechanics are just in the habit of gapping plugs before install "just to be sure", and if they don't bother to read the box they can wind up with damaged plugs that won't fire properly.
Fun fact... Bosch platinum plugs were used by all but one Indy 500 winner for the past 19 years.
