Ok I've noticed that when I'm on the highway traveling anywhere from 55 to 75 mph that if I floor the accelerator my truck starts to speed up for a brief moment but then the rpms skyrocket and the truck stays at its present speed. My first thought was my clutch is starting to go but it never slips on normal usage or even upon hard accelerations from a dead stop so I'm a little confused. My dad said that maybe my slave cylinder is going out but I have no experience with transmissions so I need ya'lls input on what might be wrong. Truck is an 01' sc lb 6speed 4x4 and the only mods are zoodad, 6637, and muffler delete.
Does the clutch engage very close to the top of the stroke?
WOT accelloration in top gear puts the biggest load on the clutch.
Try this: go out on a test drive and get into third or fourth gear and firewall the throttle while controlling your speed with the brakes. See if the engine won't suddenly start to race in the lower gears as well. That would confirm a worn out clutch.
You are right and your dad is wrong. That's exactly what my clutch did when it first started getting weak. When the slave goes out the pedal will stick to the floor and you will not be able to disengage it.
I tried what kwik said and sure enough about the time that my foot hit the floor the rpms started to jump so my next question is which brand clutch would be the best for the price. Oh and I'm looking at a bare minimum of a 400 hp rated clutch because I am about to start the summer mod fest with my truck.
A good way to test a clutch is to apply the E-Brake, engage high gear and let the clutch out while applying throttle. If you can stall the engine your clutch is OK. If you can remove your foot from the clutch pedal and not stall the engine, you need a new clutch.
Had to replce mine in my '02 F350 PSD at 110,000 miles.
ok he is another question, does my truck have a solid or dual mass flywheel? I thought I had read somewhere that my year model has a solid but when I looked on PDP and their clutch sets were talking about a solid mass upgrade I got to questioning wether what I read was right or if I was just mistaken.
Fixnair, I tried your test and I could kill the truck unless I put about 3/4 throttle on it and then I just got to smell the "wonderful" aroma of burnt clutch .
As far as I know, when you switch to the LUK style clutch you have to change the flywheel, but I'm not sure what's different about them. They are both solid flywheels.
I have heard good things about south bends clutchs but $900 is a little more than I was hoping for. I have wondered if there are other clutchs that are a higher than stock rating but still use the factory flywheel, this should take a rather large chunk out of the price since I wouldn't have to buy a new flywheel.
Also, have any of you had any horror stories from buying clutches off ebay. The reason why I ask is because I found one that would hold 500 hp, uses the stock flywheel, and comes with a 12 month unlimited mile warranty from manufacturer defects. So unless you have something really negative to say about buying one from ebay then I will probably be leaning towards getting that one.
Used to be an outfit in the LA area called Mcleod that did all sorts of clutch packs for all sorts of applications. I believe they had a web site. rather inexpensive and fairly high quality racing stuff. worth a look
