trans cooler bypass

I was wondering if anybody knows at what temperature the transmission cooler bypass opens on the 7.3. And can you get ones with different temp setting.

The big misconception about the bypass is that is is thremostatically controlled. It is not, it is just a springed check valve. What controls the said temperature is the cooler(S) and viscosity. If the fluid is cold and veins in the cooler small, then it won't flow through the cooler, rather it builds up pressure and forces through the bypass. I have a tru cool in series with the stock one, and mine starts flowing pretty good around 150.

Wow, that sort of system makes a lot of assumptions on ATF viscosity.

The only purpose of the bypass is to make sure there is always oil flowing to the rear of the trans. It is not there to help warm the trans. If the cooler is plugged for any reason, including cold, thick fluid, the bypass opens to keep the fluid going to the rear of the trans.

The fluid going into the rear of the trans is used for lubricating the rear half. With no flow there it wouldn't get any lube and the trans would be destroyed.
