I am trying to replace my brake lines. Every flare tool I try sucks (it's all imported crap, even sears). Does anyone know of a brake line kit in 1/4'' for a 59 f-250 long bed? LMC has them for F-100's but they are 3/16'' lines. Or is there a different year that is the same?
Get the Ridgid 345 flare tool. Home Despot has the tool, but you'll need to get the double-flare dies someplace else (I got one from a local industrial supplier). The identical tool is sold under some other brand names as well.
The 458R is probably a better tool, but is twice the price. These guys have both tools plus the double-flare adapters. http://www.toolbarn.com/category/flare-tool/
I don't get perfect factory-style flares with the 345, but they work. Before the Ridgid I attempted to use a Lisle flaring tool which would not make a usable 3/16 double flare no matter what I tried.
You can just use the random preflared lengths at the auto parts store and bend them, thats probably the way I will go next time.
I did a whole car with the $10 harbor fright piece. It was a PIA though, I had to first scuff up the part of the line going into the clamp then had to clamp down the tool really well. Then I used a big pair of vice grips to clamp the clamp together it worked and no leaks but it took a lot of effort.
