Code P1746 refers to communication to and from the EPC solenoid. The transmission is shifting early (hard) I'm told normally the Solenoid or Connector and Link go bad to throw this code. I want to change all three. The parts cost is Less than $100.00 and the tranny shops want $600.00 to do it. I do all my own work but have never ventured inside a transmission. Except for filter and fluid changes. I doesn't look to hard except for when those ***** fall out and I don't know where to put them back. I will be doing this with the transmission in the truck, I don't want to remove it and I don't think it's necessary. Are the ***** in the valve body or the transmission housing? Isn't there a plate like gasket between the valve body and the housing that will hold the ***** in place so long as I keep the plate tight to the valve body? I don't need to take the valve body apart just remove it to access the parts I want to change.
There is a steel separator plate that is between the valve body and case. The check ***** are mostly on the valve body side but occasionally you will find one or two that go on the case side. You may be able to pull the valve body with the plate but don't count on it. Often the plate sticks to the case and/or the gaskets tear.
To be safe get yourself an ATG manual for a 4R70W (AODE) and a pair of valve body gaskets. The ATG manual will have the check ball locations and valve body bolt torque specs in it and the infor on changing the EPC. You will need an in/lbs torque wrench to torque the valve body bolts.
