The engine runs BUT.......

Well the engine is finally running on it's own. The only problem is a lot of what sounds like valve train noise. It's an '86 302 and I don't know how long it's been since it last ran. I would guess a while. I assume it's a hydraulic lifter issue. Is there anything I can do to quiet the noise down short of replacing the lifters? I primed the oil pump before starting and I've got good oil pressure while the engine is running. Also it idles very well and doesn't miss or seem like it wants to die. I've only let it run for about five minutes. If the lifters sat compressed for some time will they straighten themselves out after a while? Should I just let it idle for a while or will I do damage. I could use some advise. John

what brand oil filter is on there. what grade oil are you using? a 20w-50 might help as well. letting it idle wont losen those lifters up much, you almost gotta rap it up a few times with a load on the engine. also check the exhaust manifolds for cracks which can sound similar

I'm using a Motorcraft filter and 10w-40 oil.

Get a can of Sea-Foam and put it in with the oil, you may have to drain a little oil out first, but it works great at removing varnish and crud. When the noise goes away, then change oil and filter.

Well the noise almost went away and then came right back with a vengence. I think I'm going to have to pull the lifters out. Crap!
