I would make sure the distributor has the right gear on it for the cam.Someway or another the gears arent matching right.Does it rip it up as soon as you start it?Or after driving it? You never know even though its all suppost to be oem.

"and then an OEM remanufactured distributor" - do you mean that the dizzy was reman'd by Ford, or a discount parts house supplier?

the dizzy drive gear location on the shaft is critical. if the gear is too low on the shaft, the hold down clamp will put the dizzy in a bind. the bind will require a lot of extra force to turn the dizzy shaft and it'll tear up the dizzy gear AND the cam gear. i can't see yours from here, but,

the damage to the gear on the cam will be on the back or underside cut of the gear. you might need a mirror or remove the cam to see it.

a damaged cam gear will destroy every dizzy gear you put on it.

here's an article that explains, http://www.cobralads.com/2006/04/why_sb_ford_dis.html

or is the bottom of the shaft below the gear getting eaten up?

ok ok all hail the idiot with answers!!!!ignorance on my part and stupidity on those behind the counter....i told them distributor for a 351M and...in their stupididty they gave me one for a windsor(which gears ARE slightly different) and ignorance on my part that i didnt check to see if they pulled the right one.....today i bought one for a 351M and it works great!!! heres a thing now......i DID get it to run 2day....several times actually but i did NOT take it for a drive(thank god)...i noticed as it tried to turn over there was a loud grinding noise comeing from the starter....and so i had my friend turn it over to start it as i looked at the flywheel(dust cover removed) and the flywheel turned the way it should and then to my astonishment did the craziest thing....that grinding noise was the flywheel stopping in mid spin then jumping back the other direction then back the right way again!!! what could do that? sum1 told me the timing was way off....then i went step by step the cam install and they told me that my timing gears were incorrect they told me that the key way was to be 45 dgrees to the right nd THAT would line up the dot on the crankshaft timing gear to the little arrow on the camshat timing gear.....buuuuuuuut the dot on MY crankshaft gear is directly above the keyway! what the !@#! is goin on!! so i just took apart my whole front end for nothin dang i get no breaks do i?

"i had my friend turn it over to start it as i looked at the flywheel(dust cover removed) and the flywheel turned the way it should and then to my astonishment did the craziest thing....that grinding noise was the flywheel stopping in mid spin then jumping back the other direction then back the right way again!!!"

"what could do that?"

a bunch of teeth missing from the flywheel could do that.

glad to hear you got the dizzy thing figured out, hope your cam is OK after that experiment.

well cam is still great i got that gear solid steel so i wouldnt have that problem...and i figured out what the grinding noise was....since i just recently bought that starter i figured it wasnt bad....well it was i went bad so i took it back and got it defected and was reimbursed with a new one and it sounds and works great now.....and luckily for me there was now flat spot ate out on the flywheel...tomorrow im timing it perfect(via distributor) and then im takin it for a test drive...oh and i DID replace the timing chain and gears......once this thing is runnin theres gonna be so many new parts that itll probably run forever...knock on wood......take care guys update 2morrow...

What does this mean???

Steel distributor gears are used for steel cams only. For a cast iron cam you need a cast iron #M12390G or bronze gear #M12390H.

The OEM gears are color coded. You need a green gear or bronze with green stripe.
