wow. you've talked me into it. I AM GOING TO DO IT. i am going to put a shifter in my truck. i went to the jegs web site , found the part using your part number - and in the next couple of days i'm going to order it. As you can imagine, if something comes up that gives me some problems, you know who i'm going to go to for advice ....
Just curious, how much would converting cost?
I'm looking at getting a 77 Bronco right now with a 3 on the tree, and just to know a cost if I'd ever change it'd be nice.
Even though, I think the 3 on the tree is kind of cool and fun.
I installed a hurst floor shifter in my 73 F100. I like it. It cost about $225 for shifter and installation kit from local speed shop. Just make sure you installed clips to hold linkage correctly. I had one pop out on me and had only second gear for a 20 minute trip back home. Still smoked a guy in honda who thought he had a hot car with one gear
oh boy, here we go. i just got the shifter and... it's a little on the short side(the handle), about six inches too short. I called Jegs and they said that there is not a longer one available, so now begins the search for an alternate shifter. Any suggestions??
How long do you need? The Hurst 3 speed shifter for truck applications comes with a 15" long shifter to clear the bench seat.
Check out pg 48-49 here, either in the full catalog, or the replacement parts and service section. Hurst shifter
oh boy. i chickened out. i couldn't do it. i jacked up the truck, and with jack stands in place, i slid under. man o man was i over my head. this is just a bit too serious for my experience. and to make matters worse - the instructions were typical - just as much ambiguity as i've ever come across. i don't know , maybe it was the fact that the truck was hovering only inches over my chest and i couldn't get my mind off of my lack of confidence in the bricks and plywood underneath the jackstands giving way ...
... the best i could hope for at this point is maybe my mechanic will let me watch him install the shifter. would that be considered kinky???
rarferd, I don't blaim you. I just wouldn't fell to comfortable my self riping out all the old linkages and cutting a hole in my floor to instal another one.
When I was in a bind, I used concreate blocks stacked w/ jack stands b/c my truck to tall for my 3 ton jack stands.
I know I should of gone to the store and got some 6 ton jack stands for like $20, but I wasn't crawling under it, so just left what I had.
NOW, you might just have to get used to the 3 on the tree, and just think of it as noone else has it and it's unique and fun.
I did this on my 78 supercab. I used the hurst "indy" shifter from summit. My cause for the problem was failing cab mounts which caused the cab to sink down on the steering column and bound up the linkage. The shifter was a breeze to install and vastly improved the driveability of the truck. It's a good mod even if you don't have a problem. You will have to do some trimming on your transmission hump to get everything to fit. Good luck.
i'm so depressed. i really wanted to do it myself. i really wanted to believe that i could do it. but really, the instructions are very vague, they're meant for someone who has experience working on the lingages of trannys. But i will tell you all something in my defense. If i had access to the lifts that all garages have - i would have given it a go. There was just too many cards stacked against me. Dammit.
You could always dig a pit in the middle of your driveway
