while out driving my truck cut out on me a couple of times, also on the same day it sounded like gun shots coming from my tail pipes,it took a minute before it would start again,i have just bought new plugs/points/rotor arm and condenser to go in over the weekend, just interested in what you guys think. cheers
Could be the condenser I did have one back fire and miss in a 36 Plymouth 6 cylinder I had years ago. The one on my 51F1 Flathead 6 has gone out 3 times on me each time it just completly died. But it sure sounds like a couple plug wires are crossed, did you pull the distributor to install the points. Some people do, (my dad was one) if so, it could be out of firing sequence.

Hi rod, thanks for your thoughts, the dizzy hasn't been pulled and drove fine without popping the other day.the firing order i have is 15486372.I have just been and checked the leads and it is set in this order
Check the coil. I had a Harley that used to do the same thing after it ran about a half hour. Coil would overheat and not work right. I figured it out by letting it run till the problem started then cooled the coil off with ice water. When the coil cooled down all was fine. Try it it just might diagnose your problem if all else fails.
i second the coil theory. Had a couple bad coils (new replacement went bad, and then the replacement for that was bad!!!) and it did crazy things that sent you chasing after it got warm (15-20 minutes)
I have a '58 model 641 Ford tractor that did exactly the same thing. I thought the points had slipped and burnt myself on the coil while checking them. Put on the new coil and the problem disappeared!
If the coil is going bad, check that there is an ignition resistor. If the coil were seeing full voltage all the time, that could be a bad thing and maybe cause it to fail.
