ok I've been told not to use a c-clamp or bf-pliers to compress the calipers on a 2001 f-350. Why not??? what will it hurt if I do .....how do I compress them????
Not sure why you shouldn't use a C-clamp, but I could see some pliers knicking something up.
I use a brake piston tool that I got at Autozone or something for a few bucks. I just use an old pad on the piston side when compressing them so that nothing gets damaged. I just have to work back and forth since it is dual piston. I've used this thing for 7 or 8 years now.
I've used c-clamps, tools like the one you posted the link to, and a big set of channel locks to compress calipers. I put the old pad in there and squeeze the pad so I don't nick up the end of the piston.
use a c clamp. but on dual piston calipers make sure to center the clamp in the middle of the two then compress. also make sure you are using a old pad between the clamp and the piston(s).
I have been told that the recommended procedure is to use a clamp, but loosen the bleeder screw and let the fluid go out the bleeder instead of forcing it back into the master cylinder. Supposedly that fluid forced backward can damage some abs systems. Also keep in mind it's a good idea to flush out the old brake fluid - it wears out and holds moisture.
