600 cfm too small?

rebuilt the 400 in my extended cab. Rebuilt Holley 600 4160, Weiand dual plane, 256 Isky cam, headers, 1 1/4 dual exhast with h pipe, badger flat tops, .030. Now I have a high rpm ping(predet.), and a huge stumble off idle. I already run premium(93 oct.). The stumble I have figured out to be the acc. pump and/or shooters. Predet. might be lean, or the egr thing. Could the carb. be too small? Should I spend the money to tune it or get a 750 cfm? Tried putting a 750 double pumper on top one time, just to make sure it was the carb. creating the problems, and the stumble went away. Could not take it on the road because it had the wrong throttle linkage. Did not notice any black out the back either.

The 600 is way big enuf. Just needs tuning. Check your ignition advance mechanisms also. If you are not running EGR you will have a ping at part throttle. Adjust your vac advance to eliminate that. Why are you running 93 octane? Did you mill the heads or something and get too much compression? What do you mean 1-1/4" duals?

I run the 600cfm edelbrock (electric choke) it is more than enough on my 400.

Listen to Torque1st, he will cut your agony time down by at least 50 percent. Also, Torque where would you look first for a recurve kit for the dizzy? The recurving is uncharted land for me.

IMO "kits" are worthless without some sort of testing machine. Find someone in your area that has a distributor machine and get your dizzy set up properly. A kit installed may get you in the ballpark but not nearly close enuf. You will find that tiny tweaks are necessary to get everything right. Some speed shops will know who has a machine and the knowledge to use it. They will probably have an assortment of springs available and know how to use them. Just don't let them talk you into a bunch of high $$$ "performance" parts. The stocker DS-II unit will work extremely well unless you are running at a drag strip etc. Some of them may feel that it is a waste of time to run a stocker. If you find one of those attitudes look elsewhere. Replacement parts are readily available and cheap compared to the aftermarket stuff. Stocker type part testing is also available at most good auto parts stores which is a hell of a lot cheaper than shotgunning an aftermarket system with solid gold parts... You can make the required adjustments on the engine but it is just much easier with a machine.

Well isnt this nice. Reincarnation automotive is only about 7 miles away. I think I might just fork up for a dizzy that is already done and save the hackery for somebody elses rig. I do appreciate the tips though, they basically let me know that I shouldnt be messing with recurving distributors.

if you do get over there, find out what the deal is on the Pro Comp heads. word is that the bare castings are good and he sets them up with quality hardware for about 1/2 the cost of Ebrocks. Ssssshh don't tell anybody!

Sorry, I meant 2-1/4" duals. How do you go about adjusting the vacuum advance curve? Would the pre 72 dist. work the same? Machined them flat, but I don't think thats considered a shave. The 93 oct. helped the ping a little. What size pump, shooter, and cam are you guys running on your carbs.?

Contacted Scott from Reincarnation Performance. He told me he would give me a dizzy, then let me bring the truck in and he would curve it to it's best while it is in the engine and give it the "ultra tune" while it was there. Smart dude and he said he has a whole pallet of 2v aussie heads that can be set up to your liking. After talking to the guy I am about ready to borrow against my retirement to have him build me a whole new engine.
