Sounds like some pretty excessive carbon build-up somewhere. That or a previous owner had filled the crank case full of Marvel Mystery Oil...probably in the attempt at getting rid of carbon build-up.
Unfortunately i've had all kinds of different colored smoke coming out the back of some of my older Fords and Mazdas...(even flames) not black tho. I'll think more about it, and let you know if I come up with anything.

Reason: wish this had an active spell checker....
Oil burns blue, anifreeze and water burn white, and Gas burns black. If your sure it is black it is too rich. Could be several things. What size engine is it?
Dave
I was waiting for the engine info too Dave... I was....assuming...I suppose that it was a 3.0 since Mazda seems to be good at keeping the series numbers in line with whats under the hood. But its jus' mere spectulation..
im pretty sure the engine is a 3.0 anyway i looked at it again hes been keeping it in the back because his mechanic works on weekends only and hasnt gotten a chance to look at it yet.
while i was messing around with it today, part of the drop-in bedliner was cut out and re-bolted back down, so i took it out and the damn thing has a goose neck hitch in it!
so we're going to get the mechanic to look into the tranny too.
its a very sharp looking truck though i'll keep you guys updated on what he finds.
my dad doesnt know a whole lot about engines but he said hes scared it might have a few bad piston rings or something like that.
If it turns out being that.. (bad rings, i.e.) Your father should be able to get a fair price for it, if he disclosed that issue to a prospecting "Shade Tree" mechanic buyer.
....Heck I'm even lookin for another 3.0L I can tinker with...
I want my ol' Ranger back...
