I have a 2004 Eddie Bauer 6.0L Diesel with 26k miles. Does the engine fan have some kind of lock up mechanism that kicks in when engine temperature reaches a certain level? I was driving up the grade outside of Palm Springs this past weekend. Outside temperature was about 95. I was pulling a trailer weighing about 1000LBS. Going about 65. At one point it the engine fan noise seemed to increase dramatically. It sounded exactly like my old Dodge Durango did when the fan locked up. I didn’t seem to be loosing power but the traffic was pretty heavy so I couldn’t try going any faster. Could this have been the turbo doing something because of high EGT? I’m in big trouble if this was the problem, it will only get hotter & my PWCs weigh a lot more than my bikes do. BTW, I have a gauge package, but haven’t installed it yet.
Fan noise while towing is common. Do a search for this also. Turbo farts are short reliefs of turbo pressure while fan noise is longer duration during fan operation while under load and hot.
I've not experienced either yet but I've read posts about both. Fan noise is normal and nothing to worry about. Turbo farts are not really normal, but I believe they're really nothing to worry about either.
The 6.0L will engage the fan for either climbing water temp or tranny fluid temp. Everyone that hears it for the first time ask what was that. Big fan, big noise and a big cool down when it is on.
