Hello. I have a few questions. First I'll tell you the situation. I was driving my 99 SD around yesterday and the transmission started to shift really hard. It seemed to shift harder from 2nd to 3rd. Then I noticed that the overdrive off light was blinking. I immediately shut the truck off and let it sit for about a minute. I went to look in the owners manual but I realized that I had left it at home. I started the truck back up and it has ran fine. Should I be worried about it? If so, what is the problem. The tranny fluid seemed fine and at the proper level.
I would have this checked out, you may have a short. I've turned off my OD at speed just to see what happens, you do get a clunk as it downshifts. You may have a short thats making the switch go on and off, making the tranny hop in and out of OD.

The O/D light blinking is the trucks way of telling you there is a problem, like a TC(trouble code) for your transmisson
I had that happen to mine, the dealer diagnosed the problem and replaced the Torque Convertor and solenoids, under warranty, I just had to pay the $100 deductible. I have had no transmission problems since
The flashing "OFF" light is a trouble indicator. It can mean a number of different things, everything from a bad sensor to major tranny problems. Generally, it is the sensor on the rear diff going bad. Get the code read at any dealership or an auto parts store that will do it for you and go from there. But you should really get the code read as problems do not fix themselves.
Thank you for all the responses. In response to all of the additional questions here are the answers. The speedo doesn't jump; the abs light does not come on or to my knowledge has ever come on. I'm hoping it is just one of those simple little things like you all mentioned earlier. I have not gotten a chance to take it in yet to have the codes read but my fingers are crossed. I would like to thank all of you for the help because it gives me knowledge when I go to the dealership.
update. Dealer said that it was the torque converter. I found a completely rebuilt e4od for cheaper than i found just the torque converter for the 4r100 which is stock.which would be the better route to go?

Going backwards to an E4OD is going the wrong way The 4R100 is the same thing, and has more updates, and the ECM will be very confused with the lack of a tranny to "talk" to
Like texan2004 said, get a local tranny shop to check it, check for codes, etc, before laying out big money. A hard 2nd to 3rd shift isn't usually a torque converter. Could be the VSS starting to go (speed sensor in rear diff), or a solenoid on the tranny itself, or even a bad TPS. Get it scanned.
