I recently brought my 97 Expedition to the service shop to have the AC checked out. I bought it used and was told it just needed to be charged which i did by a local mechanic. It worked fine for about 2 weeks then suddenly went out as i passed another vechicle. I noticed it still blew cold air in the back but not the front, which came out hot. I brought it in to a service shop and he told me that the compressor was fine and there was enough freon in the system but the orifice tube and the expansion valve needed to be changed and whatever freon was leaked out during the process would need to be put back in..My question is, i've heard from some other people that the orifice tube and the expansion valve were the same thing..Is that true?..And also after installing a new orifice tube does the system have to be vaccumed or could the adequte freon just be added?
It sounds like you might have an issue with the infamous blend door. It's the system that switches between the hot air system and the A/C. There are a number of posts on this problem....just do a "search this forum" for "blend door"
It's a time consuming repair, because pretty much the entire dash has to come off to ghet to the blend door mechanism. But by all accounts it is a "do it yourself" possibility, although a tedious one.
I was wondering if you knew if that Blend Door Fix would work on my Expedition?
Only if the blend door is broken...which it likely is.
The mechanic who wanted to replace the orifice tube and valve is incorrect. They are not your problem. No sense in making his boat payment and still not having a functional A/C in the front. Yeah, they're the same thing.
Well i brought my truck to the Ford dealer to check it out and they did say it was the blend door and actuator. He said changing the orifice would not fix the problem. This is a very expensive procedure at any garage...I read one thread about the blend door fix provided by lvmilkman2002 who said it would only work on the Explorer. Do you know if the blend door and actuator would be accessible thru behind the glove box or does the dash have to be taken out...
As scottspoerry stated in a earlier response, the dash will have to come out and it is a time consuming repair. You will not have to open the refrigerate side of the system for this but the dash will have to come out to replace the blend door and actuator.
