I have a 69 F100 SWB with power steering. It doesn't appear to be
factory and may have been swapped over from a 70 or so..
The gear box leaks like a stuck hog, so I bought a good used one and want to put a seal kit in it before installation. This box is not FoMoCo. It has an aluminum, looking cap with 4 bolts and something that looks like a "B' stamped on it the ID tag on the unit has the following numbers& letters [ HCE-G 28547 ] The NASA engineers at our local part stores are clueless about my particular box and can't find the seal kit.

you have a bendix steering gear box. rebuilt bendix units are hard to find. if you use a ford gear box, you will have to change your steering column. i have heard that you can use the same kit to rebuild a bendix unit as the ford unit, but i haven't tried it. lol.

if the unit on your truck is a two bolt cover unit it is a factory ford unit. those are easy to find. f100 to f350 used that gearbox from 67-79. the bendix unit has a two bolt cover and is difficult to find a replacement for. very few bendix units were used before ford started using their own box exclusively. you can use a bendix unit with a non-power steering steering column but if you plan on using headers the gear box won't work. jim.

If mine is a "Bendix" I wonder why it has a 4 bolt aluminum cover?

whoops, that is a typo. the ford unit has a 2 bolt cover and the bendix unit has a 4 bolt aluminum cover. i have several ford units and 1 bendix unit, tag# hce-g in the shop. i installed a bendix unit in my last 66 and retained the factory steering column. which unit did your truck have in it with the current steering column. 2 bolt or 4 bolt? jim.

Jim,
Mine had the 4 bolt aluminum when I bought it, I can claim what was
factory. The column is the factory 3spd shift column. I just wanted to find a used gear box to match the one on the truck now, which I did and reseal it and install. I picked up a real decent looking one last friday, cleaned it off at the carwash and left it on the bench overnight and found that only the input shaft leaks, just like the one on the truck, that must be a charateristic of those. A good old parts guy found the exact National seal number for the input shaft for around 7 bucks and plan to put it in this week and install that thing.

The Bendix boxes are available from O'Reilly for around $280. Consequently they want around $140 for the Ford boxes.
