5 speed 2-3 downshift problem.....

Having a problem on our 89 B2 4x4 2.9L with 5-speed shifting down from 3rd to 2nd.
I have to double clutch and give the motor some gas and pull back on the shifter handle hard in order for it to downshift to 2nd. When it does finally shift it grinds about 75% of the time. Then once in awhile it will shift just fine into 2nd as if there was no issues at all.
Shifting from 1st to 2nd never causes a problem. Neither does shifting up or down in any other gear.
Is there something I can adjust? Or is this a sync issue?
Thanks!

Sounds like the synch is going out, which isn't really bad if it's the original from '89. The downshift second seems to go out faster because it's typically used for slow turns, from my observation.

Cool

Yeah, that's the nightmare I was afraid of.

It was suppose to have been rebuilt. The guy we bought it from said that he changed the clutch but then it kept popping out of gear. So he took it down and replaced the syncs and bearings. But when i went under the truck there was an inch of dirt around the transmissions bolts!
He also, said the engine was rebuilt with 7K on it but the number 1 cylinder has bad rings!!!!
Buyer beware! Lesson learned!

It's amazing how many used POSs have "rebuilt" engines and trannys.

when i bought my 86 bII the gentleman told us it had a new engine, come to find out 2 days later i had a cracked cyl head and found water in oil. i have discovered that it has a longblock purchased from advance auto parts, but whenever the engine was replaced they left the old original clutch/pressure plate in there..it just amazes me how idiotic people can be sometimes

Hey, theres nothing wrong with double clutching. If the syncs go out on my trans before the engine im going learn to double clutch and live with it lol.

I have a similar problem, but it's usually when the rpm's are mis-matched, so to speak. If I have the speed/rpms just right, no noise shifting up or down to 2nd. I'm sure my '87 has the original tranny that has never been rebuilt nor has the clutch been replaced that I know of *shrug*

The bad news for me however is that we are trying to sell the truck to get a boat. The truck is already worth nothing and every peny I spend on it puts me further down the hole! Just was hoping for a cheap fix that's life.......
