My daughter is going away to college and needs reliable transportation. One of the cars I was looking at is the Focus. Either new or 1-2 yrs old with low miles. New ones have a $2500 rebate so that is temping. Anyways how do these cars rate? She will be driving less than 5 miles to school but may be traveling 150 miles + on the interstate to come home on weekends. Any other makes I should look at? The asian makes are lots more $$ over the domestics. Thanks.
I have a 2002 Focus with the 2.0L Zetec and Auto transmission. Great little car. I consistently get 24 MPG city and 32 MPG highway. You got my recommendation.
My sister has a focus and the only problems she has with it is the botched aftermarket power window and power lock install. I change the oil every year with syntethic with similiar driving as your daughter will be doing and the oil comes looking good every time. So far she doesn't have any complaints... very unusal.
Id also take a look at the Chevy Cobalt. The Cobalt seems to be a much better car than the Cavalier/Sunfire.
Normally I would recommend you check out the Toyota Corolla as well, but Toyota recently issued a HUGE recall that included that car, so I dunno if Id buy one of those for a while.
My mom had a 2003 Focus and had zero problems with it, she got it brand new and just traded it in with 36,000 miles on it. The only time it was ever back at the dealer was for oil changes. I think she was averaging around 25mpg. They traded it in on a new 500.
I have an 06 zx3 with the 2.0 duratec 5 speed, it has great power, and handling. I get 28 city, and 37 highway. It's a really fun car, and solid, I'm very pleased, and it's a ford, not chevy, or toyota, but FORD. Also another very dependable FORD, is the escort zx2, and they sell very reasonable. I had an 02 that I traded in on my focus, I got close to 40 mpg with it's zetec 2.0. I traded it in because it didn't have air cond, and the wife was getting cranky, but it was fast, very sporty, plus great mpg. I love both cars, would be satisfied with either one. The duratec is alittle more peppier, but for your daughter, that isn't important.

Which could be good or bad depending upon how you look at it. Ford has never really been known for being the best in the compact car market, but they are decent.
You act like Ford is so great and everything else is junk. Get real. They all have problems, defects, recalls, strengths and weaknesses.
Where I work we sell new and used cars, and almost all of the Focuses have comeback with something wrong with them. Too bad... I like them and am no fan of Fords in general. I own a 99 Civic and with the exception of rotten exhaust, and a dead power window it is trouble free for 5 years
