On my 94 F-150 the stock M5OD is starting to make some noises and is leaking. I'm looking to replace it with a beeter stronger tranny that will bolt up to the engine and transfer case, linkage, everything. Would a ZF tranny work out of a 3/4 ton? If so what years? Or would an old 4 speed work out of the 80s F-150s if I swaped transfer cases and cut drive shafts also?
2) "What can I replace my M5OD with?" Damn near anything.
The small block pattern allows you to use any transmission that Ford had in trucks. Anything from 1980-1997 will drop in with very little headache.
If you tell us what you would like to do with your truck, we can give you better advice. There is a hot debate about the ZF being better than the M5 right now, and the Ts are good if you like four speeds.
Then you definitely want to go with either a BW T-18 or an NP435. Both are indestructible, and perfect for the trail. The NP435 has the second lowest granny gear ever made for a truck. Ford used the same tranny in trucks with up to a 26000 GVWR. UPS used them in their delivery trucks for years. If you want strong, look no further.
And junkyards sell them for $300 because they have no overdrive and no one wants them.
