My 97's towing package (factory) includes the 2" receiver hitch, a 7-pin electrical connector, an auxillary relay panel located next to the main underhood fuse/relay box, and a decent-sized transmission cooler (automatic). Also has a 3.73 axle ratio.
If you don't have one, downlad an owner's manual from www.fleet.ford.com Look under the Maintenance heading.
I have a 5 speed manual with the tow package. Obviously no transmission cooler but I also have a 3.55 LS. Could one override the 3.73 with the towing package? Maybe the 3.73 is only standard on an automatic? Just wondering how this worked.

Don't know.
I just added that detail as an afterthought since I don't have any reference that says one way or another.

At least on the 97 Expeditions, you could specify different rear-axle ratios with the tow package. Mine came with 3.31s for some strange reason...with the factory tow package. I suspect the other trucks of that year, and likely other years as well, offer the same choice.
I have an 04 heritage with the tow package a 4.6 l engine 3.31 rear gear. trans cooler and another cooler I haven't figured that out yet but i think it is a ps cooler not sure though.

thought i would put my 2 cents in thanks
Not to hijack this thread...but your truck will really wake up a lot if you re-gear. My 5.4 was a total dog with 3.31s. Shorter gears really help these big trucks...I run 4.10s now, with street tires and I love it.
I agree with you all the way but i enjoy driving down the highway at 75 mph at 2000 rpm and the 18 mpg i was getting seems to have gone up on this tank with the new exhaust. i know that 410's would be great but i got rid of my last truck because of the crappy gas milage. I am not into stop light to stop light racing Give me power for the long haul and i want to go far this tank so far is 425 miles 25 gal tank and my low fuel light is not on yet. i am going to fill up tonight. wish me luck.
