So, today I was chaning the plugs in the truck and I tore two of the Wires. I ran to AdvanceAutoParts and picked up some new Autolite wires. Without thinking I took out all the wires without knowing what the firing order is. Now I tired to figure it out and just couldn't and it won't start up. Anyone able to tell me the correct configuration for the firing order for my 300? And also, why did the wire set come with 8 wires when I thought there were just seven comming from the distributor?
There should be a "1" "written" on the distributor cap. That wire, "post" is cylinder one, hook the wire from this post to the number one cylinder. The next pole, clockwise from the number one post, is number 5, hook that to number 5 cylinder. Then the next is number 3, and so on.
The cylinders on the engine itself are numbered, 1 through six, starting from the front, of the engine to the back.
Hey Optikal, I like that old school stuff, 15, 36, 24. Another number set that sticks in my mind is 36, 24, 34 and can usually be found on nine's and ten's. Is that true that all I6's fire that way? A way to check firing rotation is to crank the motor over and watch which way the rotor cap spins.
im almost positive that all inline 6s fire that way...at least domestic.
Yep, they do. Another little known fact is that most v8's fire the cylinders in the same order. The firing orders look different because different manufracturers identify the cylinders differently.
Firing order red flag! My book must be wrong or the coffee has not kicked in. But the book has listed for the v8-302 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, with the rotation of COUNTERCLOCKWISE. The v8 351 and 400 fire 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 CC and the desmell v8 420 and 444 injection order 1-2-7-3-4-5-6-8, no rotation listed. The book I am looking at is Chilton's Ford full size vans 1961-88 repair manual, page 2-6. Have a good day, and keep your eyes peeled for curve ***** and slidders. Come on coffee, day lights a burnin.....

No, all that is correct.
Also 302 V8s built after 1994 have a firing order of 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8, and is also counter-clockwise. Before 1995 the firing order is, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.
Can get quite confusing.
As I said in the above post. 300 I6s firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4, rotation. Clockwise.
