I've got an 87 Ford F-250 with a 6.9 Diesel and am looking for some help on how to identify what rear end it has in it. First off i am looking for a dana 60 to put in my offroad truck project and it looks to be about like a dana 60 in it, although it isn't a full-floater. Does anyone have any clues that can help me identify what it may have? Thanks, Matt
It's got a diesel and it's not a full floating axle? Somebody swapped the axle out at one point too, then.
Look at the rear cover - does it have a fill plug about halfway up the cover? If so, it's a Dana axle of some type. If not, it's most likely a sterling 10.25". I think D60's were the only 8-lug axles that came as a semi-floater, but I'm not 100% sure. If you can find a Dana bill of materials number on the axle, I have a decoder for it. It's usually seven digits long with a dash before the last digit.
