I have a 2002 F-150, 4.2L V6, 5spd manual, 72,000 miles.
When shifting from 2nd to 3rd, if I shift fast, I get some grinding. This doesn't happen when going from 3rd to 2nd, or between any other gear. Ideas?
I have an 03 4.6 V8 4X4 with the 5 speed and about 40k on the speedo. The manual transmission is not meant to be speed shifted. This has been the case since day one and it has never gotten worse. Most likely to occur if I try to shift too fast from 4th to 3rd but no doubt other gears combos may also crunch the gears. I have learned to take it easy and I can't remember the last time the gears crunched.
A small price to pay for the wonderful excitement of a manual transmission. LOL
Yea I would agree, a sort of pause is necessary. But it will usually happen if the RPMs are high. The Mazda tranny has some quirks and I think Ford could have done better but there are plenty of threads out here of manual transmissions that have lasted a long time even though the quirks are well known and documented so to speak.
Hopefully such is the case with your transmission, it is a quirk rather than syncros on their way out. Hopefully a year down the road the crunch will be no worse and you will have enjoyed your truck for another year. Keep us updated.
Will do. I hope it's just quirky. The truck has been great so far. I've put 55,000 miles on it in two years, and the only thing to go out was the clutch slave cylinder. Of course it wasn't covered under my oh-so-extensive warranty
I have the EXACT same issue with my '99, 4.2 L V6 tranny. I've learned to just shift it a bit more slowly from 2nd to 3rd. Also, moving the gear shifter over to just beneath the 3rd gear position and going straight up from there helps.
I've had the truck for about 10 kmiles and the problem has not gotten any worse. If the synchros were were wearing out, I would have probably seen the problem increase by now but it has not, so I'm attributing it to a design quirk.
I have the same exact problem with my 2002 4.2L 5sp F150. I'm assuming it is synco related. When I double clutch or shift obsenly slow, it is not a problem. When I put a clutch in it in the next few months, I'll take apart the tranny and post my findings.
My 2000 4.2 F-150 does the same thing from 2 to third. My truck has 210,000 mile on the orignal trans. I bought he truck with 14,000 miles. If I shift fast it grinds so just take it easy and you will be fine.
