Had 220K on the '93 3.0 extended with original U-joints. A couple of days ago I heard some real faint squeaks when the windows were down and traveling real slow. I called a parts store and had them set aside their best brand and had my wife pick them up. (Nearest parts store is over 1/2 hour away from me. Wife was passing by on a shopping trip) When I took the drive shaft off, the rear u-joint could not be moved in one direction by hand! It was really tight. Anyway, got the new ones on this morning and all is back to normal. It kinda went against my grain that the new u-joints did not have a grease jerk, but it seems like all the higher dollar ones now are greased-for-life. I guess if Ford can do it from the factory, I can use these too, but had I picked up the u-joints myself they would have had zerks in them. Oh well.
If any of you have a high mileage Aero and aren't sure when they've been replaced, you might consider doing it. I don't really like replacing u-joints on an aluminum driveshaft, but it needed to be done. Sorry for being long-winded.
