I know this sounds dumb, but my damn tailgate has done that since new. You just gotta break out the key and unlock it again. It's a roya PITA, but the dealership here isn't the best.

If you lower the tailgate there are about 8 screws on the inside of it (facing the cab when the gate is shut) that need to be removed so you can remove the access panel and access the inside of the tailgate. I'm not sure if you'll be able to remove them with the gate stuck in the closed position, but I think so.

Thank you for the response. I removed 4 screws and attempted to pry the inside plate off but it looked like it was fastened around the side of the gate that is not accessable. I am going back out to remove all 8 screws and see what happens.
