Well I did it I got rid of the V-10, It was a good truck but 10mpg driving it every day and 8.5 towing my boat just wasn't cutting it. I went to a 06 Dodge with the Cummins, I've owned 2 of them previously and I am happy to be back, no hard feelings if you want to slam by decision. Good luck to all with your trucks and thanks for all the good info.

No slamming but what is the overall advantage???

Was the V10 paid off?

Dodge was what; 30K???

30K would buy a lot of unleaded, no? (or whatever the difference was)

Were there other reason besides economy???

I'm actually about to buy an '81 Mercedes turbo diesel.........I'm planning on doing the waste vegtable oil thang. Figure I can keep the V10 for recreation and use the big sedan and the bike for all other errands/work.

Cost will be $3000 and if I save aprox $300 in gas I'll recoup in less than a year.

Buying that Cummins would take me more than 20 years to get my $$$ back (figuring double the MPG)

well I like the motor in the dodge, this will be my third. there is nothing like the diesel, the sound the torque the mileage. I am good friends with the dealer and I buy them at employee price which knocked 7 grand off the price so is helps. I got a deal that i couldn't refuse. I should have never gone back to a gas motor for me I like the diesel's just my opinion, I liked the ford it was a good truck but like i said my opinion the dodge rides 10 times better, handle's better and is more comfortable. Not trying to start any arguments here but thats what I wanted had a chance couldn't pass it up. Another reason is after plowing this year with the ford I wans't making much money because I would almost go through a 1/4 tank for one pk lot, just wasn't efficient for me the diesel is.

Well, when you said you went from a Ford SD to a diesel dodge, you said enough for me. Dodge with a cumalong diesel---a 300,000 mile motor in a 100,000 mile cab/chassis, and have they ever found a tranny yet that will hold up past the warranty period to the torque of the cumapart motor? Dodge trucks--Made in Mexico, by mexicans.

Aw come on guys... be nice

Troop did not flame us and said thanks for the help over the years..

Wish him luck and let it go

No baiting needed as it is really pointless, he already traded, spent the green, and the best we can do is be nice. No way we can say a thing that will get troop to agree, sell the Dodge, and come back..

A couple of years from now the diesel economics will catch up and he will have another chance to re evaluate the decision. I personally do not wish ill will on anybody and sincerely hope he can make ends meet the next snow season.

I don't think I would go out of my way to recommend a V10 powered F250/F350 for heavy snow plow work...Low rpm high torque of a diesel is better suited for the task.

Wish he had found a pristine 7.3L Ford (OK I am Ford biased)... but unfortunately FoMoCo screwed up with the 6.0L and we are all paying the lost market share bleeding red ink game because of it. Could have been different dynamic if they had pushed the 3v V10 for the last two years of the PSD life before the swap to yet again a new diesel motor. A company needs 20 or more years on a motor design and the V10 is approaching that.. none of the diesels lasted much more then 7-9 years... that program is broken

Troop.. seriously much luck to you and don't get baited into defending your decision.

I really should have looked around before just buying my '01 outright, but there's nothing wrong with it that a few $K's couldn't fix. Of course, I mighta been able to do a great deal on a traded-in '05/06 V10, and still pay only the $270/month I am paying now, but heck, I love my truck. And I don't like coil springs, no matter what anyone says.

Good luck troop! No hard feelings here!

I know one thing, I won't be going for an '08 with independant front suspension.

Biggest reason I bought my '01 was because it was a perfect replacement for my Highboy. Solid front axle, leafs all around, and I figured the Dana 50 front-end was at least as strong as the highboy's Dana 44HD. And the '01 has air conditioning

They've gotten too far away from the heavy-duty solid-front leaf-spring SD for my tastes. Even the '05 w/coils is too much for me.

As for Dodge, well, given what I just said, I'd never ...

But that's just me...

troop -- Good luck with your new Dodge w/Cummins. IMHO...the current Cummins is the BEST diesel in the light duty trucks of today. Also, with all the improvements to the Dodge trucks (Thanks to Diamler and the Germans)...they are making a solid truck. Heck...if anything...FORD is playing catch-up. Coil spring suspension??? What??? Dodge came out with that in like '94. What took FORD so long? Want to talk about transmissions? Again...it took FORD how many long painful years to replace the 4R100? Look at the posts here at FTE on that tranny. It is by no means bullit proof.

Hey...I am a FORD guy...that is what I like. My SD V10 4R100 is perfect for my needs. But this guy owned Dodge prior...so of course it is likely that he will return to Dodge. Especially with that Cummins engine. Super low RPM and all that torque...and employee pricing. Nice touch!

Hope your new truck treats you well!

Take care,
biz

i don't think the truck is more then 4 months old . he came into fte in feb this year. got it about then.
hay biz .german tranies. don't talk to me our my buddy at the trans shop about that pos dodge trans . or thier brakes .
both my pickups from dodge had new engines and tranies put in under warrenty. my wifes 03 liberty's trans just failed for the very same problem a second time at 50k. they make the valve body in such a cheap way . that they leave out 4 shift valve screws that hold down a plate .060 thick that bends from the pressure under it. 2 valves 4 screws missing .only by the time you know about it the unit is wiped out and your stuck on the road .only reason we keep it is that it's paid for. other wise it would be a trial blazer

captchas -- Sorry to hear about your POS Liberty, but I could have told you that before you purchased it. However, do they (anybody) make an upgrade to the .060 thick plate? Or any kind of upgrade for that tranny? Hope your tranny shop included in this new trans for a better life.

Actually, I am talking strictly about the LT trucks. I could mention about brakes, tranny, etc. too, but what do we all care that the Taurus, Focus, and other FORDs offer cheap crappy brakes that warp the first time needed in an emergency situation. Sisters Focus on 4th set already at 85,000 miles. IMHO...that s@cks! Dads Taurus already on 3rd set of brakes at 65,000 miles. I keep telling them to stop replacing with the same OEM brakes, but my Dad likes OEM. No matter how much $$$ is costs him...but strangely he still complains. Humm? Also...his tranny went out about 55000 miles...and $3500 later...his Taurus in back on the road. That is FORD building crap too.

I suppose they (all manufactures) due it...to save a dime here and a nickel there.

yes i beefed the snot out of it. after market makes a much thicker plate with the extra screws in the kit "$30.00" all super hard. all it takes is a drill and tap and 4 more threads to do the job. the bosses are there to start with

at the end of the plate they stopped machineing and taping for 4 screws over 2 shift valves thinking the plate would not bend out at 90 degs letting the valves pop out and the trans wipe out all the way. wifes got near a blow proof unit now although she says it shifts a little harder .
tough wifie live with it . i beefed vb added blue clutches and black steels . had the shop furance brazed the convertor while it was being rebuilt and use needle bearings in place of flat brass for the thurst washers . buy another dcx or german product sorry never! and i'm about as german as you can get.

captchas --

Good to hear you now have a bullitt proof tranny in the Liberty. Hope it gives you years of service. Once again...I'll say, Thank GOD for after market parts. OEM is good, but sometimes after market is better!

ate has lots of rebuild items listed.just a shame that dcx is cheap .4- 5 cent screws and 4 extra threads in the v.b. and they would not have any problem. with that end clutchs that another storie after market has a lot of parts and how too's on this unit . rear shaft hubs. modified front pumps. beefed up converters.
