'96 gas gauge!!??

'96 gas gauge!!??
Here's the deal perhaps somebody knows the answer to this......
So yesterday I was getting low on gas I put in about a half of tank....truck ran no problem. so thi s afternnon I go to start it and it will NOT go. The starter is working lots of power, the bettery is fine , the only thing I notice is that my gas gauge is reading like the truck is excessively full . It's done this before only to start up for some unknown reason, I mean it's done this a few years ago , then very very rarely since then . Yes I've crack my gas cap in case of some rare vaccum. why would the gas gauge read that , as soon as it's starts the needle will move back to an actaul gas reading .....I've tried to take it to the garage when it wouldn't start , then of course it starts every time!!! 1996 f-150,in-line-six, 4x4, 140 000kms with stock natural gas (disabled) I run gas only.
