Which oil should I use?

Hi Ya'll,

I am getting ready for first oil change in my new baby. Now I know the pervious owner used Valvoline (conventional) but I'm wondering which weight to use. I drive fairly hard but never over-rev and rarely tow the engine is a 5.0L and it has standard trans. Thanks for the help guys,

Cheers,
Evs

Where do you live? Climate makes a difference. I generally stick to 5W-30 or 10W-30 around here, usually the 5W-30 since it rarely gets above 100 outside here, so it's pretty much good all year.

There are times during a brief period it reaches 100F and can drop in the winter near -10F.

I have used 5W-30 conventional (usually whatever's cheapest-Chevron, Valvoline, Havoline, etc) for 13 years in my truck. Always get about 13-14 mpg. Last oil change I found some 5W-30 full synthetic on Schucks' hot deal rack & tried it. I got 15.5 & 15.63 mpg on the last 2 fill ups. I was amazed. It was Quaker State Winter Synthetic, but I'd imagine it's the fact it's synthetic, not the brand, that made the difference. No leaks & the truck doesn't burn it. For the difference in cost, at $3/gal for gas, it's probably worth it for me to switch permanently.

My truck has 85,000 miles on it do you think it's too late for Synthetic. Wouldn't my truck start to leak and burn oil?

My 1993 has 127,000 miles on it, so I doubt it. I understand the synthetic is a little thinner (thus the improved mileage), but if your engine is tight, I'd imagine it'll be OK. Worth a try, you can always switch back if it doesn't work well.
