My truck is a 78 302 and it has had what we (my dad and I) think is a lifter tick for a while. We've delayed doing anything about it until now due to a lack of time. My dad is fairly certain it is a lifter tick, not an exhaust leak, but we're not 100% sure.
Today we took off the valve covers and everything seems tight and secure. There is no excessive play with the pushrods or anything. We cranked the engine with the covers off but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Compression is good on all cylinders.
We're kind of stumped and want to get any advice possible before we take off the intake manifold. Thanks!
Your lifters could have a varnish build up un them and you may be able to clean them up somewhat by doing a motor flush. They sell stuff at auto parts stores for this purpose.
