Just a question... would it be wrong for me to assume that most 4bbl carburetor bases are the same in size and layout? If you have a 4v intake for a 289 or a 390, would the carburetor mount on that intake be the same, similar? say you had a holley 4150 on a 390, would that 4150 match up on 289 4v intake?

Yup. The only distinction is square bore vs. spread bore. Adapters are available to fit one type of carb on the other type of intake manifold.

You should maybe find out what the cfm rating is on that 4150. The list number is on the front of the choke housing and if you give that to a parts guy, he can tell you the size. If you want the best efficiency, just be aware that even a 600 Holley is over-carbureting a stock 289/302. The stock Ford 4100 was rated at something like 480 cfm.

thanks for the info, my question was hypethetical... I'm waiting on a restored 4100 from Pony carburetors, it's the spacer I'm having trouble locating ( specifically for the 289) but I did locate a spacer that looks identical for a 390 on mansfield mustang site and was wondering if that would work.
