About a year or so ago I pulled a trailer from here, Northern Cal, to Kansas City and back. Truck ran fine and pulled great, except when I got in the higher elevations. It would loose it's power big time, seriously go so bad it would loose speed while going down the grades. And smoke, boy would it smoke, left a trail for everyone to follow. I've read that the IDI can't compensate for elevation changes, that you have to do it manually at the IP.
im sry i just ment it blew bluye smoke at start up every time i start up tons of blue smoke cold or hot.. but it goes away when u drive it then if you let it idle for a few it blows it again just enuff to be annoying and its smells strong.... the air filter does need to be cleaned but isnt bad that bad and i dont know bout that fuel filter thing is it in the water seperator? and what do i gotta do to change that?????
The air filter is critical, there is no such thing as "not that bad" when talking about a dirty air filter on a diesel.
Air flow is critical, both into and out of the engine.
A clean fuel supply is also critical.
The biggest power robbing part on your truck is the stock Ford turbo downpipe, a 2.25" ID pipe that they ran over with a fork lift 3 times before it was installed on the truck. Not near big enough to let the exhaust out of the engine, even worse after it was flattened out. The rest of the stock exhaust is not much better.
ATS sells a turbo outlet flange and downpipe that will let the engine breathe, and run much better. I understand it is a bit on the pricey side though, I think someone told me around 300 dollars.
