I'm looking at a 1987 250 4WD pickup with a 6.9L diesel and the only problem is it has an automatic transmission. I would use the truck to haul hay wagons, farm implements, and a 16ft car trailer loaded with scrap metal and the occasional pulling tractor (6500lbs tops), and well as other things. Which tranmission is behind the engine? C6? What can be done to beef up this kind of transmission for hauling these kinds of loads. Any help is appreciated. I really want to get rid of my crappy Dakota and get in a real truck. Thanks. 4020FarmBoy.
I've got a C-6 Auto behind my 86' 6.9 and it handles 12-14K without a problem. I'ts a pretty tough tranny. My 1980 bronco with a 400 V8 and a C-6 made it to 609K tranny was still great, engine blew however.
The C6 is the workhorse tranny, most trucks used in heavy duty applications came with it up until the mid 90s. Nice thing is about $250 for a kit and you can do it on the kitchen table.... Worst thing is it is only 3 speed and is usually coupled to a 4.10 so the engine is reving to beat the band. A Gear Vendors will give you the best of both worlds.....
Look at the drivers side of the ip if there is a vacuum controller mounted on it with vacuum lines plugged in to it, it is a c-6 and you should also see a mechanical kick down linkage on the ip also.
If you see a electrical controller mounted on the drivers side of the ip with wires plugged into it, its an e40d. I had a 1989 7.3 4X4 that had a c-6, but there is no guarentee with out looking
I have an 87 with the 6.9 and a C-6. I bought the truck with 120k on it and had to replace the trans shortly afterward. I don't know what they did with the truck before that and it might have been abused. I got a rebuilt one at advance auto for $700 and it works fine, I'm pretty sure the OD autos are a lot more expensive. Like was mentioned in the other post the big downside is that I'm running almost 3000 RPM at 65 miles an hour which doesn't help the mileage any.
My dad's 84 has the C6, the truck was baught new, and the trans has only been gone through once in 300,000. The C6 is one tough tranny, and can easily be reworked to handle the load. His truck has the 3.54 gears in it instead of 4.10's, with the 4wd.
