I need some help putting my "new" front disc brakes on my '72 ford f100. (The components came from a '74 f100.) The rotors are on and I understand how to put the pads/caliper on the rotor. However, I can't remember how to secure it with the brake hardware.
I'm assuming that the metal bracket slides between the bottom of the caliper and the spindle. But how/where does the little metal spring go? Does it fit between the metal bracket and the spindle or the metal braket and the caliper? Also, do the tabs (ends) on the spring bend upward or downward?
The metal bracket (called caliper support key) does slide between the bottom of the caliper and spindle. Place the spring on top of the caliper key with the ends of the spring facing down. The notches on the caliper key face towards the rear to accept the retaining screw. Use a LIGHT SMEAR of high temp grease (antiseize works well) on the groves of the caliper where it slides on the spindle. Place the caliper in position on the spindle and use a large flatblade screwdriver between the lower end of the caliper and spindle to hold the caliper in the up position while you insert the caliper key/spring assembly from the side. Once its started, tap in place with a hammer then secure it with the retaining screw.
