That even though I have been operating with a activated ,licensed version of Windows Xp Pro Sp2 on a computer that the MB and Processor are toast, and have upgraded to another computer, I have purchase an other Licensed version for a minimum of $200.00+ ..if I expect to have the XP O/S.
So if after you activate your copy and your MB and processor breakdown get ready to fork over another few hundred bucks to buy yet another one.
So special work around for the upgraded computer in same household, same e-mail address.
Well, try this one. I have a Media center for some of my graphics programs that requires it. I run XP Media Center and was real happy with it until I got hacked. All of the exe and dll files were deleted BUT, the hacker in his ultimate wisdom, replaced some of the drivers and exe files with XP Pro files. Now comes the good part, the recovery discs won't work because of the XP Pro files on the hard drive. Microsoft, oh how I want to hurt Bill Gates, does not sell Media Center for me replace the program. After fighting with the morons for several months, I finally had to break down and do what?............buy another Media Center CPU with the program factory installed just like Microsoft said I would have to do. I guess I should have bought a pirated copy of Media Center off of Ebay. Now I have a one year old Media Center sitting on the floor that has no operating system. Any suggestions that will run Media files and graphics but does not have Microsofts name on it?
My windows XP Pro Sp 2 was activated on my system that just went kaput.
When one sends in for activation like I did in 2004 when I purchased this OS,Microsoft gathers the info from your computer ....this is the ONE License per ONE computer deal.
To avoid piracy.
The previous system wasn't anywhere near the same as this upgraded one I just purchased.
Because the systems aren't the same, with the new system and my XP version if have it reinstalled it will be regarded as Pirated because the systems don't match.
I would not enjoy all the benefits of updates, patches, etc.
I was told putting my Old Hard drive won't work either because it is full and I have replacements for them as well.
This means I have to go buy another licensed Version to use my computer and activate the new version.
There apparently isn't any work-around to this problem.
Microsoft wants to sell a version for EVERY computer no matter what the circumstance.
All you have to do is use the phone activation instead of the online activation. After you go though the automated part. It will say there is a problem with your key and you will be transfered to live person who will get everything straightened out.

Piracy is one thing but Personal use is another.
I agree they are taking this piracy/copyright bull to far.
Also what Microsoft doesn't tell you is you do not have to buy the full version for $179.00 (US). All you need is the upgrade version which usually is $99.00 (US), but they have sales for $89.00(US). When you install the upgrade version it will ask for a previous OS disk. Just pop in an old win 98/ME/2000 and it will continue on and you save money.
51dueller is right. Use phone activation and do it that way. Tell them what happened to your hardware and they'll talk you through it. It's a pain in the rear, but you can activate your original copy on the new gear.

And this is exactly how I resolved the problem of needing a second activation with MS. They ask you why you need reactivate it; tell them what you have done and they will take care of you for no charge.
How did they contact you?
I called them to ask about my options were after hearing about the possibility about not being able to use my Old HD with OS loaded on it , in this new machine because of the One License per One computer thing.
what would happen if you didnt do this?

I just hung up the phone after waiting 1 hr 32 minutes to talk with a rep at the activation center.
They played the same song ( call ignore music) over and over again for that length of time too .
That's enough !

XP Media Center OEM edition on sale at Newegg.com $110
I've had to reload my XP about 5 times over the past year for various reasons. Each time I have to call for activation. They give a little speach about using on one computer, blah, blah, blah. Then I get nasty with them, then they give me an activation code. So far, haven't had any major problems with it.
