Fan noise

Fan noise...help
Hey guys,
I recently purchased a 1988 Ford F150 4x4 with a 5 speed and 4.9 liter. Today after a trip I shut the engine off and noticed a fan noise that sounded like an electric fan coming from under the hood. I popped the hood and expected to see an aftermarket electric fan but I didn't. What I saw was what appeared to be am OEM fan sitting on the right top of the engine, near the heater hoses. This fan had a hose that ran out of it and looked like it went down into the manifold. The fan ran for awhile after I shut the truck off......what is it? What is it for?
