Hello to all spend lots of time reading on this site but very little posting. But I do have a question I have read on several threads that the 4.2 is common to have a little pinging or spark knock when under a load. I own a 2002 super cab xlt 4x2 automatic it runs like a top it has 35,000 miles it has always had this very quiet ping. It can only be heard if you have the radio off and really listen. It doesn't matter what grade fuel you run. The truck has a drop in K & N and a Flowmaster mufler with dual tips. I bought the truck used with 24,000 miles, Ive run cleaner and even steamed the cylinders with water. nothing made a difference. Is it possible to have the stock computers fuel curve richened up a little without buying a programmer and doin it myself. I'm not into performance so I cant see spending the money for a programmer. or will it be fine to leave it alone. Ive had an old 4.9 ford six that ping alot and it cracked a piston of course the 4.9 had 299,000 miles on it before it happened. anyway love this site so what do you say..
Its common for the 4.2 to ping under a load.If it happens all the time, then i'de say you have a problem. The EGR ports do get carboned up pretty good on these engines and that leads to major pinging. The only fix for that is to remove the lower intake and clean the ports.Mine has been cleaned twice, each time they were partially blocked.
