hey i have a 86 F-150 with a 302 out of a mercury car. it just got the new engine put in it and the dual exhaust ran. problem is that is is out of time.
i want to get it times as much as possiblein the parking lot of the exhaust shop before driving it home. it sound to be very retarted in the timing. now i know i can tiem it just by turning the distributor until it sounds about right. but is there a bolt i have to loosen to turn it and what way makes it advance and what way makes it retard ? thanks
yes there is one bolt towards the bottom of the distributor(towars the block). The advance is probley vacuum operated so dont really worry about that. I have been told if adjusting timing by ear just turn dist. till engine idles the highest and then back it back down just a hair. And then when you get home use a timing gun.
It's a 1/2" but you may need a u-joint adapter between the bolt and the socket extension. Otherwise the distributor's sort of in the way of the extension, but it's usually possible to do it without the u-joint.
If this is an EFI (don't think so in an 86 but thought I'd mention it) you need to remove the SPOUT plug by the dizzy before trying to set the base timing.
