The Wife has me tearing out old cracked concrete patio this weekend. Plan is to lay brick-type pavers over compacted sand. Some plans call for constructing a perimeter with treated 4"X4" 's spiked into the ground with 24" pieces of re-bar. This helps holds the bricks in place, since they are layed dry with no mortar. This makes sense with a square or rectangle...how would you do a curve and hold the bricks in place? Thanks for your suggestions!
If it were mine I would nix the treated wood, it will rot and draw termites. I would do a brick border, brick always looks more elegant than wood planks. I like to lay brick borders in a ready mix concrete shallow footer. No worry about them getting squeezed outward that way. If a brick border is not a option, the building supply houses carry edging for pavers on dry beds that pins hold down. It comes in flexible too. good luck on your project

" deep of 1" or so gravel, tamped down with a homemade concrete roller
landscaping fabric over that
4" deep of sand, tamped down.
Tap blocks into place as close as possible, then sweep sand over them to fill in the gaps.
the key is good drainage, thus the 1" gravel, which will minimize movement from frost. Frederic has it right. A paver-layer I work with uses angle iron with the wide side underneath to hold the pavers in place. You can heat it up and bend it, but you need to plan it out ahead.
I would use either a brick edging or "ribbon" or maybe a 4" concrete "mow" strip as they both can be formed into any shape "radius" that you need and they look really nice. Good luck on what ever you use.
