Ok I need to know ASAP what size wrench is needed to remove the fan clutch nut on my '86 F150 300? We are in the middle of trying to replace the water pump! Can't find the info anywhere, been hunting desperately, as we need to go buy one first thing in the morning to get the poor ol' gal back on the road ASAP.
Thanks in advance, you guys always come through for me!
I use a larger adjustable wrench and give it a quick rap with a dead blow hammer. Usually it's easy to unscrew by hand afterward. Remember it's left hand threads.
I went thru this once... it's not a standard size. You need a ford fan clutch tool [can borrow from Autozone] or a big [12"] crescent wrench as havi mentioned. Last time I hook one off I used said big wrench on the fan nut and one of those rubber strap wrenches to hold the water pump pully.
Sadly we don't have an Autozone close enough to borrow from, we may end up buying one, or buying a BIG crescent wrench...the one brought home from hubby's work was not big enough.
Thankfully said truck was given to me and it is not a major cost expense to repair the water pump. Yeah again for that!
Some NAPA stores do the loaner tool thing too. Can always try a discounter like Big Lots for a 12" crescent wrench... mine came from there for a whopping $6 and it's been one of the handiest tools in the box.
Other option: You can get the pump off with the fan still attached, just pull the shroud. Take it in to your parts store and bet they'll pop it loose for you it you're buying the new pump there.
i just did a wp replacement on my 96 300, which by the way had RIGHT hand threads, look on your fan shroud it should tell you, some models did come with left hand threads, it can be confusing. you need a very skinny wrench, a crescent wrench wont do it because you need TWO i repeat TWO wrenches to do it. one to hold the bolts on the pulley and one for the nut itself. if you are lucky you wont need the first wrench if your engine has good enough compression and your belt can hold the pulley.
which is why the hammer blow works, as it spins the nut faster than the engine can allow with belt friction being the difference. But, yes left hand changed to right hand some time after 1989. Rhainy_C posted again with this problem.
