I have got to say how AWESOME this thing makes the truck sound. On WOT this thing rages now. it can get a little droning at mid-throttle levels but it passes quickly. Peppier off the line, but I haven't sensed any significant gains in power to speak of. Install was cake too!
ReForder, I also have the Volant w/Ram Air Kit . I am wondering if you also installed the Ram Air Tube through the tow hook? If so, did you find it to be a pain in the ars to install and does your front tire clear it when fully turned?
I just installed an Airaid CAI this weekend...it helped throttle response, it sounds nasty when I accelerate hard, I feel some seat of the pants improvement, and my Flowmaster cat back sounds even better than before. No droning at cruise, some going uphill, but it blends with the Flowmaster sound, so it's no big deal. The radio makes it all go away!!
What's up with the ram air tube? Are you talking about ducting from the hole in the fenderwell to the front bumper?
I didn't get the Ram Air tube with this kit, it wasn't even an option. Maybe they stopped making it because of the tire rub issues. I think it would suck enough air in through the 3 1/2" opening that seals up the the stock fender opening and with the square opening facing the front of the truck, comes out just below the headlight. Do you have a different kit maybe?
I did notice a slight plasticky bumping noise at idle today, something is hitting somewhere. Have to look tomorrow.
The two piece Ram Air Tube connects underneath the Volant plastic box where the hole is and runs to the tow hook opening. The tow hook has to be removed and then reinstalled with the tube. The front tire rubs a little if turned all the way. The two piece tube assembly has to be installed from underneath and without a rack it was a real pain. I hope the extra cold air helps. I am not sure at this point because I have not driven it enough to know.
ReForder, I had to remove the black bracket that held the stock baffle on at the alternator area to get a better fit. Did you have to do this?
Yeah, the instructions say to remove the bracket but to make sure you put the bolts back on (DUH!). I could see the install being a real pain in the @$$ without that bracket removed. The instructions failed to mention that you use one of the extra bolts, washers/lock washer, and nut to secure the filter box to the metal tray it sits on top of. But I had no option whatsoever to get the ram air tubing. Not sure I would've put it on after trying to install it as you described.
I wound up loosening the 2 bolts that hold the filter assembly to the air box, in order allow for some extra movement with engine idle. Noise is gone now. Apparently the taughtness of the system allows for the box to bump against the power steering resevoir during idle.
I am not sure if the Volant is gaining anything for us. However, I do like the sound at least for now. I installed the Corsa exhaust which the sound is only slighty louder than stock, so the C.A.I. sound was a nice compliment. Maybe kind of an expensive route if all we gain is sound. I guess time will tell. Good Luck!
