All of my searches found problems with voltage dropping, my aero likes to be different....
This morning, it started spiking the ammeter, enough to illuminate the 'amp' idiot light, but it comes back to nrmal just as quickly.
I've found I can cause it to happen by reving the engine in nuetral, so if we do find a fix, it will be easy to confirm.
Generally though, it does not require a change in RPM to spike, it appears to be random. This leads me to believe it is a bad connection someplace, or the voltage rectifier is in the process of failing.
At lunch today, I'll be checking connections, as I find them, should I instead be spending the time picking up a new alternator since the long weekend plans involve taking the aero on a random roadtrip through North Georgia and Tennessee Smokey Mountains?
Also significant, the battery is pretty weak, it was allowed to discharge fully a couple times before I bought the van.... could it be a shorted cell in the battery causing a big draw?

Definitely change both the battery and the alternator before you go anywhere. The voltage regulator on the alternator is about to go or already gone. If you keep running it this way, you will get an engine fire.
Thanks, and I misspoke in the title of the thread, unfortunately I was unable to find an 'edit' button to fix it... voltage, not current...
But either way, the connections are all clean and solid, so I'll pick up an alt today and do the swap. No point in pressing luck.... Luckily it appears to be a simple job...
To check a draw you need to cut 2 wires from alternator and connect there ammeter, but what is the battary voltage? If any cell of battary is shot, next morning voltage is lower 1.7-2.4 volts of norma (6 cells per battary). And if ypur battary is made of whight plastic, bad cell is darker, then other, check for acid level in all the cells, if it is possible, because many batteris are not servable. Well! But I belive your battery is good, look for other problem!
