novice question: power valve
I read in the posts to check this as one of many things for backfiring. I have serious backfiring through the carb after new wires and plugs and timing. Shakes like it is missing. I will replace the cap and rotor next, and possibly the distributor, with the recommended packages for the Petronix ingition upgrade.
Also, would the engine even start if timed on the wrong TDC stroke?
I assumed no, because it wouldn't even start until I tried the other TDC, but now it backfires a lot. (Checked the wires about 57 times! Even moved up one and back one.) I did the escaping air test, but I am no expert.

PS. Sorry if this posts twice, but looked like I lost the first one.
