I have an 02 f-250 super duty 7.3. A friend has the hypertech programmer lll that he programed his truck with.....same model. I have heard that it only works on 1 truck at a time......in other words he'd have to unprogram his for it to work in mine. Is this true and if it is does anyone know of a way around it?

There is no way around it. I had the Programmer III on my '04 6.0 and had to enter in the VIN #, so it was married to that vehicle only. Same way for my '06 6.0, except it programmed in the VIN # itself.
I will have to say though. In my opinion, the Hypertech Programmer III is a good choice to go with to add more power and still get great mileage.
The programmers reads your VIN, and re-flashes your computer. Then if you want to chage the program to a different stage, or back to stock, then you need to go in and re-do it. (look for about 30-40 minutes each time you are re-flashing the comp). If you ever want to sell your programmer, you need to take your truck back to stock first. If you dont, it will be useless to the buyer of your programmer.
All 3 different programs seem to give the potential for better fuel efficiency. If I am light on the throttle (and basically foregoing the added power) I have seen 1-3 mpg increases. If I am hammering on it to play, then the fuel efficiency certainly goes down the toilet.
Interesting, with the 30hp program in it, it is marginally quicker, but sounds the same, no other differences with exhaust. With the 100hp program in it, it is a totally different animal, and when I stomp it, it sounds like the engine is really angry and wants to eat a chevy
(and it leaves a cloud of diesel smoke that kills all mosquitos in a 1/4 mile)HOWEVER - looking back, if I were to do it again, I would buy the HyperPac from one of the ebay sellers, because it has a lot of built in add ons like performance monitors, dyno, etc. Look into that too.
