The Optimum Pertronix HEI!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Mar-02 AT 10:10 PM (EST)]I finally decided to do it. I have good points- but truthfully, I am bored, and I want to increase power. So I am going to order the stuff.
O.K. Ive done some reading! There are a lot of posts here about the hei discussion and I feel we(or at least I) need input on what is the optimum set up for the ignition. I would appreciate replies on your personal successes. I will list it short and simple so that maybe there could be some great replies.
Mine: (70'/250/390{rebuilt,stock}/2-barrel/headers/2.5" exhaust/granny{not for long})
1. distributor- stock, new, with "Ignitor"
2. cap and rotor- stock
3. coil- "Flame Thrower"
4. wires- ? (7mm?, 8mm?, more?, brand?)
5. plugs- ? (brand?, splitfire?, platinum?, GAP????)
6. anything else to add?
List items that you used as 1-6.
I have also heard about the coils not functioning as they are intended due to the installation. What gives?
Who's got the badest system?

The Optimum Pertronix HEI!!
Here's what I've got:
1965 block 390 bored .030" with forged TRW pistons, ARP studs and rod bolts, Crane cam 260/270 .501/.533, Edelbrock heads, full roller rockers from Rocker Arm Specialists, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, 750 Holley, headers, and 2.5" exhaust. The tranny is a C6 completely rebuilt and the rear end still has the 3.50 gears.
For the ignition:
1. distributor- MSD Pro Billet
2. cap and rotor- MSD
3. coil- MSD Blaster 2
4. wires- Accel Armor Shield Wires - They are the ones with the stainless braided cover
5. Plugs - the champion ones with the smaller electodes recommended by Edelbrock for their heads
6. MSD 6A ignition module
What you outlined will improve cold starts and their will be no more points to adjust. You may want to look into a MSD or a Jacobs Ignition to augment what you are doing. I've heard that the Jacobs is a great unit, even better than MSD.
Food for thought,
Reggie
