i hear everyone getting 16+ out of their x's not mine 13 at it best 01 psd 4x4 help me hunt down the mpg. i get 7-8 towing 10k tt toy box
Only 13 mpg?!?
My X didn't even come close the 13 when I first had it; mine gave me 15 right off the lot. One major factor could be where you're filling up. Some trucks actually have a preference as to what type of diesel they like. Mine likes Wal-mart diesel more than anything else. If I use Citgo, Flying J, Mobil, or anything else, I don't get much out of the tank. Another factor could be your driving habits. Do you really mash it when accelerating? Do you drive about 80+ on the freeway? What about around town? If you do about 65-70 mph on the freeway as well as, 45-50 mph around town, you should see atleast 16.5-17 combined, 15 city, and about 17-18 highway. Something you should start with is a fuel additive. Gold Eagle has a great lineup of diesel fuel additives that will seriously clean up your fuel system and things lubricated. Check it out here: http://www.goldeagle.com/dieselpower/products.htm Right now they're giving out one free bottle of diesel power after mail in rebate. So this would be a great place to start. Your fuel and air filters are also common things that bring down mileage. The fuel filter is due every 15K (give or take) and I'm not sure about the air filter because I've always had an aftermarket filter. Another factor would be your transmission and differential. If I'm not mistaken, the tranny fluid is good for 30K and the diff, probably 100K. (could be wrong) If the fluids in them haven't been changed in awhile, I'd have them changed.
thanks td all fluids and filters have been changed already i got my x in december with 119k it has 136k now already cleaned k&n three times and fuel filter twice and ran fuel treatment thru it twice i watch the tire pressures rotated every service so far tires are doing great i can drive it and my wife can drive it does not matter 13-14 thats it period when i pull my 10k tt toybox 7-8 mpg and thats it i am looking for 12 pulling and 16-18 empty just do not know where i losing fuel mpg the over head lieometer says i am getting 19=23 mpg on paper 13-14 with the fuel prices this thing is killing me do not get me wrong i know it not a wego car but it should do better than this!
I read on another forum tonight that sometimes when a vehicle is taken into a shop, especially a dealer, that they will automatically download new "updates" to the system. These usually have to do with emissions, and adversely effect mpg. disconnecting the batteries for a couple minutes will revert everything to the original settings, and since the factory settings seem to be better than you (or I) am getting this should be a cheap fix. the other forum said that things might run a little rough until the computer dials things in again. I am going to try this myself this weekend, although my mileage is not as bad as yours.
tires are 295/75/r16 fairly aggressive thread i think they are desert runners do not remember the name they are noisey till you get them hot no hard to start issues hot or cold good idle good acceleration and power when i jump into it black smoke is visible but not excessive so i pretty sure it has not been chipped checked computer still intact and my scanner did not show any readings that indicated and programmer fix nut normally your mpg improve with the resets
My first suggestion would be to check the fuel pressure. There was a thread not too long ago in the 7.3 PSD forum that talked about how a guy was getting poor milage. When he checked the fuel pressure he found it to be very low and got a new fuel pump. While he was at it he added a boost-a-pump and Voala! He said he was getting better milage than when he first got it and the consensus was that Ford fuel pumps tend to loose pizaz early and some have even swapped out bigger Bosh pumps. Do a search in the 99-02 7.3L forum on fuel pumps and see if you can find it. If not let me know and I'll look for it too.
thanks turbo i remember reading that thread and i wondered about that too! local oreilly part is $210.00. i don't have the test gauges to find actual fuel pressure. i try to find/make some though. it would be great if this fixs my problem them i can move on the my transmission and suspension issues
Yeah,
Hope this helps! It looks like we are in the same boat, I have a trucool sitting in the garage waiting to go in and I think my shocks are doing about as much good as a rubber band would be doing. What shocks are you looking at? I think I'm going to be going with the Bilstein HDs and then this summer adding some air springs.
Ok I'm in the same boat here I just my Ex last tuesday and went through over a 1/2 tank of gas (2002 W/V10) went and filled it up and took 23 gallons and on the trip meter was 240 miles i did the math and came up with 10.5 miles a gallon. Is there anything that i can do to get a little more out of it. Most of the driving on that tank of gas was around town with some highway. The dealer where i purchased it had gone over the vehicle and put new tires on. I am planning on towing with it but at this rate i'll be lucky to get 6 mpg.
In a nearly 4 ton truck? The only way for you to get better mileage is to get a diesel. Your V-10 mileage is normal for even a moderate foot on the go pedal. Back off a lot, keep the RPM under 2000 and you can get it to 12 around town....maybe. A steady 55-60 on flat ground will get you 15 - 16. YMMV, literally.
I tow 8500lbs, give or take and get between 7-9 mpg, headwind and terrain dependant. Coming back from a Florida vacation through New Orleans to Chicago on a 60 degree January day, we had such a tailwind that it nearly compensated for the load of the TT and we hit a 10.5 for 400 miles. Over 11 for a large part of it. That was cool.
Thanks I didnt know if that was the norm or not or if there was something i was missing. The camper that i will be towing will be in the same range as your around 8500 lbs. and that will be mostly highway travel so hopefully the mpg wont decrease dramatically
