Hi All, just got a 84 f-250 with a 5.8. With a holly 4bl. Their is a light on the top of the dash just to the left of the right turn signal indicator. Their is no cover so I can see the bulb. What is it for and how can I reset it. Plus I was trying to find out where the vac hose goes from the air temp sensser on the air cleaner.I can't find the air cleaner stuff on the vac diagram. Thanks Dave
It should only come on under three circumstances on you 1984.
1) Parking Brake engaged.
Check the switch on the Parking brake pedal. Unplug the switch and the light should go out. If it don't, continue on...
2) As a momentary test when you first start the truck.
The ignition switch and lock cylinder actuating rod could be out of adjustment. With the engine running try turning the lock cylinder back towards the off position slightly. Not enough to kill the engine, but enough to kill the light etc...
3) You have a major problem with the brake system, and shouldn't be driving the vehicle.
Check the porportioning valve, in the engine compartment. Located on top of the framerail on the left side. It is a metal valve that has one wire plugged into it, and four metal brake lines attached. Remove the wire and the light should go off. This could be a minor problem like, you need a new porportioning valve, or your brakes need to be blead, to a very serious problem of, only half of your brakes are functioning, either front or rear.
What about an 81 f150? This is a problem my truck had when I bought it and the other owner's husband just put black tape over the light housing on the dash. My truck had a break booster or whatever added for trailors, could this be it?
The same thing should apply to an 81 F-150, check all the above mentioned items on your truck as well. A trailer brake shouldn't affect the dash light, unless it's an older type that plumbs into the brake line, then I suppose it's possible.
I think the parking brake switch is only on '84 & up. Neither my '83 F350 or an '82 F150 that I got parts off of had one nor does it show up in my wiring diagrams. Maybe an option?

That is correct, but I do not believe it was an option though. I have a lot of literature, and it's not mentioned until the 1984 model year, along with the Clutch pedal starter interuption switch.
Thanks's 81 EXP it was the porportioning valve senser. I know the brakes are bad the front res of the master is dry. Just wanted to make sure the light was not emission relatet. Thanks What about the VAC hose? Any one knoe
Your vacuum hose diagram on radiator support should show it. A/CL=Air Cleaner. In general there are two main components: A/CL BI Met (air temp bi-metallic valve) and an A/Cl Diverter Valve (solenoid operated flapper valve). Some vehicles may have other items such as a Cold Weather Modulator (CWM). If your diagram is missing try clicking this link and looking for your vehicles' diag.: http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/0c/e6/05/0900823d800ce605.jsp In most cases it runs off straight manifold vacuum.

My '82 has this too. The parking brake is completely off. I do have major brake problems, but their mechanical (i.e. shoes, drums, etc) Its been on for a few months and I cant figure out why.
